Physical Rehabilitation Medicine - L5-S1 fusion and McKenzie Therapy

Expert: Jeffrey De Bellis, PT, MS, OCS - 10/30/2009

Question
Dr. DeBellis,
I had L5-S1 fusion in June of 2008.  In Sept of this year I was injured (my arm was jerked down as I was bending and at the same time I was twisted).  I was diagnosed with a sprain and had 3 weeks of McKenzie Therapy.  I'm still having a great deal of pain in my butt area.  My question is: Do you recommend McKenzie Therapy if someone already has fusion (in L5-S1)?
Thank You! Judi

Answer
Mc KenzieTechniques and treatment are part of a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment methodology for the entire spine. I am aware of the method and some of its clinical applications but I am by no means certified in it.  That said, I can not confirm whether a pre existing spinal fusion is a contraindication for use of the method. I would hope that the therapist applying th emethod and using it as treatment be certified in the method.  IF that is they case he/she would be well versed in its indications and contraindications.
