Physical Rehabilitation Medicine - Broken wrist

Expert: Jeffrey De Bellis, PT, MS, OCS - 11/3/2009

Question
Had two very severe fractures due to airbag on both bones of my wrist. One fracture has a permanent plate inside. Cast removed four days ago. I start OT with hand expert in 2 days and return to work as a teacher about a week later. Is OT the same as PT? Have very good insurance but no idea how often I will go.What should I expect? Also cannot straighten my elbow now due to the cast having kept it bent. When I broke my elbow about 12 years ago I had PT 3 times a week and had a great recovery.

Answer
Occupational Therapy is not the same as Physical Tehrapy.  They are two different academic degrees and profesisonal designations...however there are some similarities in clinical application.   OT's tend to have license as experts in the rehabilitation of the upper extremity which originated in their Functional rehabilitation of the arm after neuroligical inicdent like strokes.  Over time this expertise became more focused and stemmed into the development of the "Certified Hand Therapist" designation which gives OT's the expertise in rehabing all hand injuries.

That said,  I have found OT's with the CHT designation to be quite bright and have superior knowledge of the hand..my guess is you will be quite pleased with the level of attention you receive and the outcome.

Good Luck,
