Question
sir
we were doing this practical in physics of finding the coeeficient of static friction using an inclined plane.
First a wooden block is kept on an smooth inclined plane and the angle of the plane is increased slowly. At one angle the block just begins to slide. We note the angle and find the coefficient of static friction by formula
u = tan (angle of repose)
where u = coeff of friction
Now a 100 g weight is kept on the same wooden block and again the the angle of repose is found at which the body just begins to slide.
similarly more weights are kept on the block and experiment is repeated for all different weights.
few questions
1) should the angle of repose come same  everytime for all differnet weights kept on the wooden block or angle of repose change with increase in the mass of the body sliding?
Will the angle of repose increase or decrease with increase in mass of the block?
2) My readings for different weights kept on the wooden block were coming different. have i done the practical incorrectly? Why are my readings differnt from each other?
3) Does coeffecint of static friction depend on the mass of the body?

please help
eva

Answer

Hi Eva,

1)  The angle of response depends on the nature of two surfaces in contact and not on the weight of the block.

2) The angle of response may differ very slightly but average value  will remain unchanged.

3) No.It depends on nature of two given surfaces.

I have taught Physics to 9 to 12 graders for more than twenty five years at a renowned public school in north India. My areas of interest are classical mechanics, fluid dynamics, static and current electricity, geometrical and wave optics, sound and modern physics.I would welcome questions in these areas from students of levels one through four.

Experience

I completed my postgraduation in Physics in 1974 and obtained a Bachelors degree in teaching in 1975.I started my career as teacher in July, 1975 at Methodist High School - a renowned more than hundred years old senior secondary English medium school in north India affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations,New Delhi.I taught Physics to the students of grades 9,10,11 and 12 till 2004.More than hundred of my students studied in Indian Institutes of Technologies and most of them are settled in the U.S.Several hundreds of them have done B.Tech. courses from various Engineering Colleges spread across India.
