Question
Faraday had used mercury in the construction of simple homo polar electric motor. Why he preferred it and what type of substance can be used?

Answer
> Faraday had used mercury
> Why he preferred it and what type of substance can be used?

Mercury is metallic conductor, which is necessary for carrying current in an electric device. Faraday used mercury because it is a liquid, and thus can more easily maintain electrical contact as the motor turns.
