Megh Malhar is a Hindustani classical raga. The name derives from the Sanskrit word Megh, meaning cloud. Legends say that this raga has the power to bring out rains in the area where it is sung.
It has been heard that Tansen had the power to light up fire through his song called Raag Deepak and he had taught his Daughter to bring rain by singing the Meg Malhar.

Sound is a mechanical wave that is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through some medium (like air or water), composed of frequencies within the range of hearing.


Is it true or Do you believe that singing Meg Malhar and Deepak ragas can lead to raining and starting fire respectively ?.

ANSWER: Hello Prashant,

No, I don't believe either of those legends. Coincidentally, among our Native Americans (whose race was incorrectly called Indians) there was belief that some could cause rain to fall by dancing a "rain dance".

Aim : Check whether fire can lit up in oil lamps by singing Deepak Raag from Hindustani classical music.

Apparatus : Oil Lamps, Cotton.

Procedure : 50 Singers will sing the Deepak Raag indoors with every singer singing the Deepak raag for 1/2 hour interval.

Findings / Observation : 1. The Oil Lamps are lit up. 2. The Oil Lamps are not lit up. Either of the Case 1 or Case 2 will be observed.

Conclusion :

Case 1 :

If the Oil lamps are lit up with fire, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves (Deepak Raag)  can generate Fire in the Oil Lamp.

Case 2 :

2. If the Oil lamps do not lit up with fire, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves (Deepak Raag)  cannot generate Fire in the Oil Lamp.

Findings / Observation : 1. Rain happens. 2. Rain do not happen. Either of the Case 1 or Case 2 will be observed.

Conclusion :

Case 1 :

If Rain happens, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves
(Meg Malhar Raag)  can generate Rain.

Case 2 :

2. If Rain do not happen, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves
(Meg Malhar)  cannot generate Rain.


Summary : Specific sound waves can produce fire or rain if the experiments are successful.

There are problems with the experiments you describe:

If the result for an experiment falls into the Case 1 description you need to demonstrate that it was not a coincidence.

If the results for an experiment falls into the Case 2 description you need to demonstrate that the results would not be positive if there were 70 singers, or 7000 singers, or if the 50 singers had sung better, or if ...
