Megh Malhar is a Hindustani classical raga. The name derives from the Sanskrit word Megh, meaning cloud. Legends say that this raga has the power to bring out rains in the area where it is sung.
It has been heard that Tansen had the power to light up fire through his song called Raag Deepak and he had taught his Daughter to bring rain by singing the Meg Malhar.

Sound is a mechanical wave that is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through some medium (like air or water), composed of frequencies within the range of hearing.

Is it true or Do you believe that singing Meg Malhar and Deepak ragas can lead to raining and starting fire respectively ?.

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant S Akerkar

ANSWER: Of course not, human vocal cords don't have the energy to affect rain directly, nor the energy density to create fire.  Sound waves might slightly affect systems in a chaotic way over veeeery long periods of time, but it is inherently impossible to predict whether they would bring more or less rain.

QUESTION: Dear Prof Steve

Thank you.

Experiments can be performed in this cases.
-------------------------------------------

Aim : Check whether fire can lit up in oil lamps by singing Deepak Raag from Hindustani classical music.

Apparatus : Oil Lamps, Cotton.

Procedure : 50 Singers will sing the Deepak Raag indoors with every singer singing the Deepak raag for 1/2 hour interval.

Findings / Observation : 1. The Oil Lamps are lit up. 2. The Oil Lamps are not lit up. Either of the Case 1 or Case 2 will be observed.

Conclusion :

Case 1 :

If the Oil lamps are lit up with fire, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves (Deepak Raag)  can generate Fire in the Oil Lamp.

Case 2 :

2. If the Oil lamps do not lit up with fire, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves (Deepak Raag)  cannot generate Fire in the Oil Lamp.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aim : Check whether rain happens by singing Meg Malhar / Malhar Raag from Hindustani classical music. Weather forecasting conditions indicate clear skies and there will be no rain for another two months. This test can be carried in summer season.

Apparatus : NA

Procedure : 50 Singers will sing the Meg Malhar Raag outdoors with every singer singing the Meg Malhar raag for 1/2 hour interval.

Findings / Observation : 1. Rain happens. 2. Rain do not happen. Either of the Case 1 or Case 2 will be observed.

Conclusion :

Case 1 :

If Rain happens, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves
(Meg Malhar Raag)  can generate Rain.

Case 2 :

2. If Rain do not happen, we can conclude that SPECIFIC Sound Waves
(Meg Malhar)  cannot generate Rain.

Summary : Specific sound waves can produce fire or rain if the experiments are successful.

Do you feel if the above experiments (Specific sound waves can produce fire or rain by singing Deepak Raga and Meg Malhar Raga respectively) are successfully performed by contestants, would you nominate his/her name/s in Guinness World Records Book by creating this world record/s as this could be difficult feats to accomplish ?.

Answer
There's really no record here, just the opportunity to publish a research paper about the discovery after extensive observation.  But I already told you, the human voice has no such capability that you describe, no matter what song is sung.  It would be a waste of time, and with an experiment you should always try with (for example) one oil lamp 50 times with different singers before you go wasting all that money on tons of them.  But I'm a physicist, it won't work.  If it does, you have a clever illusionist there.

Expertise

I can answer most basic physics questions, physics questions about science fiction and everyday observations of physics, etc. I'm also usually good for science fair advice (I'm the regional science fair director). I do not answer homework problems. I will occasionally point out where a homework solution went wrong, though. I'm usually good at explaining odd observations that seem counterintuitive, energy science, nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, and alternative theories of physics are my specialties.

Experience

I was a physics professor at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, research in nuclear technology and nuclear astrophysics. My travelling science show saw over 20,000 students of all ages. I taught physics, nuclear chemistry, radiation safety, vacuum technology, and answer tons of questions as I tour schools encouraging students to consider careers in science. I moved on to a non-academic job with more research just recently.

Education/Credentials
Ph. D. from Duke University in physics, research in nuclear astrophysics reactions, gamma-ray astronomy technology, and advanced nuclear reactors.
