Question
QUESTION: I have an upright WH Paling Co Ltd piano. It has an iron frame with the name 'Belling'. Under the lid on the top the number 8331 is stamped into the wood. There are marks where two candlestick holders may have been. Could you provide any details on the actual age of the piano.

ANSWER: Hi Alan:

The Paling pianos were made by Beale.

The Beale numbers are all 5 digits.

Let's keep looking for another number and get back to me.

Regards,

QUESTION: I have looked all over, but not pulled any panels off and cannot find another number. Could you suggest where it may be ?

Regards

Alan

Answer
Sure...

Numbers on uprights are:

On the iron plate above the tuning pins

On the back of the piano stamped into the wood

On the struts of the iron plate

Or...erased with time and service.

Don't be afraid to take apart what you can...

Open the lid, look inside, you will see what is holding the front panel...take off the front panel.

Below the keyboard is the "kneeboard" usually held on place with a spring clamp of some sort...take it off.

And then just roll the piano away from the wall to inspect the rear.

Let me know how you do.
