Question
QUESTION: I am considering the purchase of a Kohler Piano, which according to the seller was Made in the U.S.A. in 1983.  The Serial Number is 796323.  Are you able to confirm the age and value of this piano assuming it is in Very Good condition?
Thank you very much.

ANSWER: Hi Matt:

The piano was indeed made in 1983.

Can you tell me the model, or how tall it is from floor to lid. I'm assuming here it is a vertical piano.

If it is around 44" tall...the worth in excellent condition is around 1500.00.

However, buying a used piano without having it looked at first is chancy.

You can go to http://www.ptg.org and find a registered tech in your area to take a look first. You will have taken care of two problems at once: attesting to the viability of the piano and finding a registered technician to service it.

QUESTION: Ralph,
Thank you for your initial reply.
It is a 6'3" Grand Piano with very little wear on the hammer pads and good sustain.
The model number is 6104.
I will look into having an expert inspect the piano, but would you mind providing another estimate given this new information.
The seller is asking $9,000.
Thank you,
Matt

Answer
OK...that's different!

List price in 1983 was around 17,500.00.

This is a mid level piano at best.

6500.00 tops in excellent condition. Piano value is more like a car than real estate!

Again...have it checked out first. There's nothing like getting a piano home that looks great but has a soft pin block or something else your eye can't see but a technician will pick up on.

Good luck and keep me posted!
