I have a Winter & CO Baby Grand with the serial number 161013 and know nothing about when it was built or whether its considered "valuable" or rare. It seems kind of unusual in that it strung differently from other pianos - it's straight strung. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I know very little about pianos, but, this one seems to be something of a mystery. Thanks.

Hi Jeff:

This piano was made in 1937 in New York.

And, you are correct...it is "different". However, not different from pianos of the 19th century before the advent of "over-stringing" the bass.

It is an oddity, and for 1937, rare, but not valuable.

I think this was a gimmick of the time. And, they also made the plates around the 1940's out of cast aluminum (Alcoa).

The "resotonic" scale was not an improvement as much as it was a throw back.

What you have there is a "conversation piece".
