Question
My church has a Thomas Celebrity 810.  The Leslie speaker is making a humming noise.  We think that oiling it will help, but it may need other maintenance also.  What do we need to do to get the noise out?

Meige

Answer
Hello Meige!  When troubleshooting a source of hum, we need to decide what kind of hum you are hearing - 60 cycle or 120 cycle.  This sound is usually not caused from lack of oiling although it is a good idea to keep the bearings lubricated per the instructions commonly placed on or near the Leslie unit.  If the Leslie's bearings have actually seized, the motor could be the source of the hum.  However, electronic hum is usually caused from a ground problem (60 cycle) or bad filter capacitors (120 cycle) in the power supply.  It can be difficult to tell the difference and usually requires someone experienced in troubleshooting hum issues.  Because of the organ's age, I suspect you have bad electrolytic capacitors. Is the hum always just through the Leslie? or does it sound through the Main speakers as well?
