Piano, Organ, and Keyboard/WP Haines Serial

Hi Ralph,

I have a WP Haines piano that doesn't look to be very old, possibly 30 years or so. However the only serial number I see on the sound board is 30984. I don't see any other identifying information on any piece. This serial doesn't seem to make sense. Any ideas?

Hi Scott:

OK...we have a slight problem.

This piano had work and not great work. Notice the first bass string just to the left of the serial number, the aggraffe is turned badly...probably during the stringing.

Also, notice the discoloration around the number. The steel plate was painted and the person who did it placed a piece of tape over the number to preserve it. The assumption here is they didn't have the technology to replace the number. That worries me.

That serial number is actually before W.P. Haines started. Their first number starts 36000.

My guess is this piano was manufactured by Winter who made Haines, W.P. in c. 19ll.

It doesn't look old because it was refinished.

I hope that helped!
