Question
I am a volunteer with Kiwanis at a charitable flea market.
A Lowery Holiday Organ with excellent condition Oak  cabinet. has been given to us. Most of it seems to work and sound great  However the lower manual has constant buzz and very little volume. Any idea what is the problem and is it worth fixing.

Answer
Hello Richard!  Buzz can be caused from a number of things.  The tip off however is the fact that it is only occuring on the lower manual and with reduced volume.  My guess is the amplifier channel for the lower manual is at fault.  If you are certain the channel for the upper manual is OK, then we could assume the organ's power supply is good...although, it should still be checked for proper voltages.

Because of the likely age of the instrument, I suspect an electrolytic capacitor is at fault in the amplifier circuit...or perhaps a bad speaker.  These are usually not difficult repairs.  Unfortunately, you did not mention the model number of the Holiday organ.  There were approximately two dozen different Holiday models made between the late 1950's to the late 1980's.

If you can find someone who has some troubleshooting skills who is willing to spend a little time, it could be the organ can be repaired in short order.  Without further information, this is the best I can offer.

Since you mention the cabinet is in excellant condition, I think it's worth repairing as long as the repair doesn't get out of hand.
