Hello All!

I have a Mathushek Square Grand Piano and would like to know more info about it, i.e. when it was made, where, etc.

The serial number found etched on the inside left, close to the front is 5836.  At least I think this is the serial number (see picture).  If not can you tell me where to find it?

Can you help?

Hi Allen:

The piano was made in 1871 in New York.

This was just before the company starting making the more traditional grand. Modern piano making was in its infancy at that time.

As an instrument the were not at the top of the mechanical and acoustic heap; really more furniture than piano.

The cases were "artsy" and today found more as furniture than anything else.

By the way, that is the correct serial number.

Restoration wise, there are few that can handle them, and they are not cost effective.

The only time I got to restore them was for "collectors" with very deep pockets. In many cases, action parts had to be custom made, and I made them for myself as well as other restorers and great expense.

I hope that helped!
