Piano, Organ, and Keyboard/Maynard Brothers Piano

Question
My cousin has a saloon style piano with Maynard Brothers stamped inside of it and on the flap that covers the keys. It says Salisbury, NC and I have checked it and found that they did exist in 1911 but nothing after that point. She found the following # inside of it 15114 and in the lower part she found 196 and Cl stamped in it. Do you think you could give us some history on the piece and if in fact Maynard Brothers built it or if they were the retailers? There is a label on the back but it has been damaged over the years and is unreadable. Thank you!

Answer
Hello Jalynnette,  I am unfamiliar with the Maynard Bros piano.  With nearly 14,000 piano names having come and gone over the years, this is not unusual.  It was common for large piano retailers to contract with builders to produce pianos for them.  The retailers would place their own company name and logo on the fallboard, making the pianos very difficult to track because the retailers would not consistently stay with the same builder.  Story and Clark is an example of this practice.  The other possibility is the piano was built outside the US such as in Canada.  I believe the following websites might be of help to you.
