I own a Gulbransen Organ that I will replace all the electrolytic capacitors, some resistors, diodes, and all the transistors.

Gulbransen Model E (2)
Tone Generators  # TG-8

Question: Can I replace the original Germanium Transistors (2n43)
with Silicon units such as the 2N4403?
         (without circuit modification?)

(Background: Retired Biomedical Engineering)

Thanks,
Steve

Answer
Hello Steve!  The components that surround a germanium transistor are more critical because germanium is more sensitive to, among other things, signals applied to its base.  Fortunately, silicone is more forgiving.  So, going from germanium to silicone is usually not a problem. When swapping out transistors, however, you may notice a change in the tonal character of the signal.  It's usually not a bad thing...just different, but keep this in mind.  You may end up having to tweek the voicing a bit.
