Question
I live in England. Very recently I found a pigeon egg in a nest in our garden that has been abandoned and I was wondering if I could make an incubator instead of buying one. If so, how long must it stay in the makeshift incubator for, and on what temperature?

Many thanks,

Izzy

Answer
Hi, Izzy,

If the egg had begun being incubated and then abandoned, it will not hatch.  An egg has to be maintained at a constant temperature of about 99 degrees F, maintained at a certain humidity level, constant air circulation, and must be turned counter clockwise half way at least every 12 hours.  If you cannot maintain this environment with a homemade incubator, an egg will not develop properly and hatch.

A pigeon egg takes about 18 days to incubate in the above conditions.

Chrys
