Subject: baby pigeons in low nest in a tree

Question
Hi- I noticed a nest of babies today, they are just a few days old (we fund pieces of egg on the ground yesterday). The mother (?) has come back but I don’t hear any baby bird noises & I hope that we haven’t scared her. Is there anything I can leave near the nest area (water? food?)

Thank you & great website!

Answer
Hi again, Amy,

You can try it, but I've had a fake owl in my yard near my pigeons for about 8 years and it has had no affect.

Hi, Amy,

Baby pigeons make very little noise until they are a couple weeks old.  Then you might hear them begging for food if you get close enough.  Pigeons are not noisy birds at all.  Just leave them alone and they will be fine.  You could offer the parents pigeon feed or wild bird seed or dove food.  Place any feed on the ground where they can see it, in an "open" bird feeder, on a flat tray of some type, etc.  Because pigeons are fairly large birds, they need an open place for feed where they can see what's going on around them, where they can land on the edge/side of, etc.  Hawks/falcons love to eat pigeons, so they are leary of eating from regular bird feeders (they can't hold on to anything) or something enclosed.
