Answer Hi, Lisa,
Great question and you are very observant!
The pigeons could be eating small grubs or insects they find in the soil. Also, pigeons must have grit in order to help grind up the seed they eat in their gizzard/crop...they might be eating tiny rocks/gravel that are in the soil, or maybe the soil itself, as a substitute for the grit. I've seen pigeons eat small gravel in the street or on a gravel driveway in order to get the grit they need. You can buy small pigeon grit at feed stores, etc., that sell chicken feed. If you can't find pigeon grit, try small chicken grit. Pigeons also like small bits of charcoal (the size of a piece of grain). If your pigeons aren't eating pigeon grain (a mix specially made for pigeons) or the right mixture of grains, they could be lacking in certain vitamins/minerals. You can buy pigeon vitamins/minerals to supplement your birds. Visit Global Pigeon Supplies on the internet or Foy's Pigeon Supplies or Seigal's Pigeon Supply....they sell pigeon products that you can order. If you can find calcium that comes in bag form, this is good for your pigeons. Most pigeon grit has vitamins/minerals added.
