AboutStacie G. Expertise I can answer questions related to health, care, behavior, and breeding. If you have an emergency situation, please take it to a veterinarian with avian experience. Unfortunately I do not know much about actually racing pigeons, but I do show exhibition king pigeons.
Experience I have raised pigeons for approximately 12 years now. I got started in the hobby by rescuing an injured feral when I was 12 years old and successfully rehabilitated him. Unfortunately, he was not releasable and so I kept him until he passed about two years ago. From that feral, I actually realized that pigeons were great companions and I had dismissed any previous misconceptions I had heard about them.
Now I am focusing my attention to the show king although I do have a few racing homers, utility kings, and MFC helmets.

Question Hi -
I would like some information/recommendations on what are the best types of cages for pigeons? I know they need room for flight. My sister and husband have two rescued pigeons - one has a deformed foot and cannot perch very well. Please advise what is best for them, as at the present time, they have taken over the guest room!
Thank you
Answer Hi Rose,
Do you plan on keeping them inside? Any cage large enough to give them exercise will do just fine. Bigger is better, although not always possible! A large rabbit cage or guinea pig cage could work nicely and it would be great if you are able to let them out an hour or two a day as pigeons don't particularly like to be locked up all the time. It would also give them the opportunity to run those little legs off and to just generally act like a pigeon! A guinea pig cage (or any solid bottom cage) would especially be of good use to the one with an injured foot because it is a solid bottom cage and he would not have to stand on wire all the time. Perhaps you could find thicker pieces of wood or log to place on the bottom of the cage so he can sit on something if he chooses. I hope this helps!
