Question
i am Pilates student. I would like to know different equipment and mat exercises to be given to a person with slipped disk on the neck.
Thanks a lot.

Answer
Dear Ofelia,

Thanks for your question.  Are you a Pilates client or a teacher training student?  If a client, you should be with a teacher who knows this information.  If a teacher training student, I will give you some guidelines and let you figure out the rest.

Basically, you want to modify exercises for as little neck motion (especially forward flexion) as you can.  NO rolling over onto the neck, NO weight bearing on the head/neck.  YES spine extension, YES shoulder strengthening.

So avoid rollover-type exercises (including short spine & tower/monkey).  Rolling can be OK if they stay on the shoulder blades and off the neck.  Teach proper neck mechanics for things like 100s, etc.  Focus on building strength with long box prone, chest expansion, rowing, etc.

Within these guideline you should be able to figure out what not to do.

Feel free to ask more questions.

Regards,

Lynda
