Question QUESTION: I'm looking for an instructor to help me put together a modified Pilates program. I'm 55, 5'5'' tall, weigh 110 pounds and started Pilates 43 years ago as part of dance training.
I had the hip replacement July 14, 2009. My therapist says I'm the first patient she's had in 14 years who asked to be taught to do floor exercises.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida and am willing to travel almost anywhere to get back to my exercise regimen.
I'd also be grateful for help finding a video/dvd Pilates program.
THANKS!
ANSWER: Hi Stacie
Having worked with many post-hip replacement clients I can say that you are not the only one wanting to exercise!
They are a Power Pilates certified studio in Tallahassee who will know the basics of how to modify for hip replacement (since it is crucial to exercise correctly to avoid dislocating your new hip).
For DVDs look at Alycea Ungaro and Liz Gillies.
In general you need to avoid hip flexion of more than 90 degrees (so no big hamstring stretches, please) and avoid crossing your leg past the midline of your body (too much internal and external rotation or ad/abduction).
Enjoy and let me know if you need anything more.
Best,
Lynda

QUESTION: Dear Lynda,
Thanks for answering. I appreciate the suggestions on the video.
I feel quite doubtful about the Pilates Pavilion studio, however. The FSU athletic program where these women seem to have trained is not very good. I've worked with the best teacher in Tallahassee for 6 years and she can't help me. I'm keenly aware of the "hip precautions" you mention which is why I need a specialised teacher since I can't see the 90 degree angle and do the exercise at the same time.
I've also had some very bad experiences with "yoga" teachers in Tallahassee who were clueless when it comes to appropriate sequencing of the postures. One even just brought her copy of Yoga Journal to class and learned the postures with us. You'll be horrified to know that this particular woman teaches under the auspices of our hospital. She also refused to let us work with mirrors--to see that we were doing the work appropriately. Can you imagine?
Not good.
My hip situation is too fragile to put myself at risk with the bunch of amateurs at the Pilates Pavilion. As I said before, I'm willing to travel. Do you personally know of any place in Washington, DC or New York or San Francisco?
Thanks again
Stacie Humphrey
