Question I'm looking for an instructor to help me put together a modified Pilates program. I'm 55, 5'5'' tall, weigh 110 pounds and started Pilates 43 years ago as part of dance training.
I had the hip replacement July 14, 2009. My therapist says I'm the first patient she's had in 14 years who asked to be taught to do floor exercises.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida and am willing to travel almost anywhere to get back to my exercise regimen.
I'd also be grateful for help finding a video/dvd Pilates program.
THANKS!
Answer Hi Stacie
Having worked with many post-hip replacement clients I can say that you are not the only one wanting to exercise!
They are a Power Pilates certified studio in Tallahassee who will know the basics of how to modify for hip replacement (since it is crucial to exercise correctly to avoid dislocating your new hip).
For DVDs look at Alycea Ungaro and Liz Gillies.
In general you need to avoid hip flexion of more than 90 degrees (so no big hamstring stretches, please) and avoid crossing your leg past the midline of your body (too much internal and external rotation or ad/abduction).
