Answer
Jacob,

First and foremost I'm by no means a copyright expert. Plus, your question comes all the way from New Zealand :) International law could quite possibly be different from what's slated in the USA. From what I've found online it would take quite some time to gain permission from the artist and you may have to pay some sort of royalty.

There are plenty of people on youtube that take copyrighted animated shorts and put movie to it. In no way am I granting or endorsing you to use this piece. I will say that since this is for educational purposes and if you make the proper reference within the film than I can see no problem.

It might not be a bad idea to do a search for copyright organizations online just to be sure.

Jacob, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Don't forget to rate my response to you.

Good luck with your project!
