Just to ad a little more...their name changed many times and at one point they had settled on "The Tea Set", and when they found themselves playing a concert with a band of the same name, Barrett came up with the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" (later "The Pink Floyd").

He is absolutely right. I have a cd documentary on Syd Barrett to back him up on that. Also, a biography of John Lennon that I just finished reading (which I recommend to everyone) talks about these two famous blues musicians. Also Pink Floyd went through several other names before finally ending on that name too.

Its from the latin Pinkus Floydus which is the name given to something that outlives its usefullness.
