Subject: pododermatitis

Question
Last year we adopted a rescue pit bull (abround 12 to 18 months old). it wasn't long before we discovered she brought some 'pets' with her, and for 5 months she was treated (dip and oral) for demodectic mange.  As of Feb she was still clear.  During the summer and fall her eyes were slightly runny which we thought might have been due to frequent dipping.  It cleared up in the winter, but returned this spring-probably allergies.  This week I noticed she has little bumos all over the sides of her foot pads and between her toes. Vet says-'pododermatitis', put her on antibiotic and prednisone (both short-term), epsom salts foot soaks daily, and wash and dry feet every time she's been out.Recommends allergy testing.  Is there anything we can do to bolster her system?  She gets Hills SD lamb and rice, peanut butter in Kong, Pet-tabs and vitamin C daily. Do you have any tips or suggestions?

Answer

Mange can also cause a  pododermatitis.
Demodicosis ( Mange)  commonly affects the feet, which may become very itchy and swollen. Secondary bacterial infections are also extremely common with this disease. Skin scrapings will help to determine if it is mange again.

I would change the food to a holistic brand or a more natural brand such as :  Solid Gold, Wellness Formula ( holistic ) or Canadide.

Try to use a food that is LOW in grains.  A food that is higher quality than the Hills Brand.  Many people are told that this brand is wonderful but it is just a fair grade of food.  The Hills SD has too many fillers ( junk fillers).
I am sure you did not know this and your vet has little education on pet nutrition.  Many Vets get minimal education to None at all, on pet nutrition.

As far as the Pet-Tabs, again an average rated vitamin.  A better one is NuVET Plus.  They call NuVET the Ultimate Pet Supplement and Vitamin.  NuVET Plus will boost your pit bull's immune system and help to fight off the allergens.

NuVET is not sold in stores ... Buy direct:  Here is the web site:

You need 1 wafer treat per day.  At first, I like to start the dog off on two per day, for your dog's weight/size.  The dose would be 2 NuVET Plus wafers per day for 10 days.  After the 10 days, then down to 1 wafer per day.  You would see results in less than 2 weeks.  NuVET helps to prevent Mange, too.

Guaranteed to work, or your money back!!!
Ask for Joan at (ext 265)  ( 1-800-474-7044)
Joan would be glad to explain the money back guarantee.

As for the vitamin C.... very good, make sure it is ESTER C.  ( this is the best you can buy)

One more thing.  I would take her off the peanut butter.  Give her cream cheese ( no flavor added), in the kong.  You can freeze this is you would like.  You can add a few beef jerky pieces to the cream cheese and then stuff the kong.  Yum Yum good!!!!

I hope you follow my advice.  This is my specialty....pets with allergy problems.

As for the treatments you did for the mange, this could have cause her immune system to be weak.  Again, I am sure you did not know this.  Your vet will not tell you the side effects.  Also, the steroid treatment is fine for short-term..... Again, steroids are nasty to the body.

Allergy testing can be helpful.  It will cost you at least 500.00 and they will come up with a list of 10-20 things that your dog is allergic to.  Some you can stop ( foods) and Many you can't stop, such as the Environmental allergens.

BEST wishes,
