Plant Diseases - Blue Plum Tree

Expert: Dr Stephen Vann - 10/25/2009

Question
This Blue Plum tree is approx 15-20 years old. Blossoms and sets fruit then fruit seems to shrivel and fruit drops.  Each plum appears to have at least one spot that weeps and then looks almost moldy. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer
Phyllis:

If the fruit seems to rot on the tree before it shrivels, this may be a disease called Brown Rot.  Take a look at some pictures of Brown Rot using "Google Images" on your computer. If you have just one tree, be sure to remove/destroy any fruit that is on the ground before the spring gets here. A good general sanitational cleanup is useful.  If it is brown rot, there are a few chemicals that can be sprayed on the tree. Check with your local garden center for some good choices.  If the tree is too tall, this may make spraying difficult since the entire tree needs to be covered.

Keep me posted on your image search!
