Plant Diseases - Jacaranda tree weeping

Expert: Dr Stephen Vann - 10/24/2009

Question
I have two young jacaranda trees which were taken indoors before the frosts started. I forgot to switch off the central heating in the room with the trees and the leaves are starting to fall, but in addition both trees are oozing what appears to be sap from the stem and branches - any ideas what is causing this and what I can do to correct.

Answer
Bob:
The tree may have been stressed by (1) heated air currents and (2) light changes. Leaf drop can result from either of these factors. I am not sure about the ooze. Examine that area on the stem  for any obvious entry point that might be for an insect.  Always be careful on the watering! Do not overdo it. They are not going to require as much water as they do outside.

Regards
Steve
