Plant Diseases - pin oak tree

Expert: Dr Stephen Vann - 10/25/2009

Question
We have a mature pin oak tree in our front year.  This year, the bark has started to fall off, the is a white residue on the inside of the tree, there seems to be a new tree???? or limb growing up between the bark and the hardwood under the bark.  There also seem to be lots of parasites living on the tree.  All of these problems are on the truck not more then 6 to 8 feet off the ground, just on one side of the truck.  The upper limbs look to be in good condition, the tree still has leaves and looks good.

What is wrong with my tree?

Answer
Jeff:
From your description, I would suspect that your tree may have some level of decay inside. If so, this often a slow, yet progressive decline in overall health. Insects often use the decayed areas for a home. All you can do is try to maintain the tree as best as possible by being sure it is watered well , especially during hot dry periods and fertilizing according to a soil test. Ultimately, the tree will become weakened physically to the point it may fail. At that point, you may need to consider making firewood out of it.

Regards
Steve
