Question Hi
I am having a full tummy tuck on 6/26, can it interfere with a hiatel hernia that I have? What about digestive issues such as gerd & chronic gastritis?
Thank you.
Answer Hi Christina,
There's more about tummy tucks at my site, www.bodysculpture.com.
It is certainly possible that a tummy tuck could affect some of the issues you've mentioned, but a lot depends on how severe the problems are, how extensive a procedure you're having done, and other issues such as your total body weight, where any excess fat is (ie, intra-abdominal or extra-abdominal), future weight gain in those regions, etc.
You should, of course, discuss this with your plastic surgeon and it's probably a good idea to get a medical clearance, with particular focus on these specific concerns, from your internist. There are medications that can be used to minimize whatever is causing these problems, and to lessent the symptoms. You may need to increase or adjust these medications during the peri-operative period, so it's a good idea to have your internist on board at this stage of the surgery, rather than just calling him or her after the surgery if the symptoms have been exacerbated.
