Subject: radiesse

Question
I just received radiesse on Wednesday.  I have 2 little bruises and I know that's expected, but I also have a small bulge or lump no where near the bruising.  The plastic surgeon told me it's just tissue damage and it will go away, if it's tissue damage from the injection why don't I have a bruise there?

Also, this may sound ridiculous, but is it safe to smoke cannabis after having the injections?
Thank you for your time.  I don't know what people would do without people like you.

Answer
Hi Michelle,

There's more about fillers at my site, www.bodysculpture.com.

Bruises are basically a small amount of bleeding beneath the skin that has come to the surface.  But where that blood comes to the surface is not necessarily where it originated.  In fact, it's often lower down, due to the effects of gravity.  After a lipo of the hips and thighs, for example, bruising may extend down below the level of the knee.

The lump may be tissue damage (ie, swelling from the injection, including some bleeding) or it may be a bit of excess Radiesse (or a little of each).  Massaging it slightly may help it settle down, whatever its origin (check with your PS before you do this, of course).    If the bruises are slightly below the areas of the lumps then it makes perfect sense, but they don't have to be related even to that degree.

I am unaware of any studies that show a harmful effect (or any connection at all) between cannabis and Radiesse, nor have I heard of this from my patients, so I'm afraid I can't help you with that.

I hope that this helps, and good luck,

Dr. E
