I’m having a routine vasectomy done in about 39 hours from this posting. I’m getting general anesthesia.
The sheet the urologist gave me when I made my appointment listed a number of drugs to avoid for a week prior to procedure, primarily to avoid excessive bleeding. No problem. Except that they listed Advil even though they did not call it by its generic name—ibuprofen. I took three 200mg ibuprofen on Monday. Then just today I discovered that Advil is ibuprofen.
The time between taking 600mg and my surgery will be approximately 85 hours. Do you think I have a cause for concern?
Otherwise, I’m a health-conscious, regularly exercising, lacto-ovo-vegetarian. My concerns arise from the fact that I haven’t had a medical procedure done since a tonsillectomy at age 5. I’m more concerned about the surgeon canceling/rescheduling the procedure than I am fearing complications!
Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
Answer Hi Chris,
I advise patients not to take ibuprofen (or similar medications) for at least two weeks before surgery and we recommend three. I am not comfortable with increasing, however slightly or hypothetically, the risk of bleeding in such a case.
You need to speak with your surgeon to get his/her opinion on this matter.
