Question Hi Dr. Engler,
I appreciate so much your time. My question is this. I have a lump of fat on my upper back, just below my neckline. I believe it is because I have spent so much time reading in bed (I am a graduate student) that I developed this malformation. My posture is good but I cannot wear revealing necklines because I feel this contour is so ugly. Can this area be liposuctioned or what is the procedure for addressing this type of problem. If liposuction can be achieved, what about extra skin in this area or will it reduce down?
Answer Hi Emily,
There's more about lipo at www.bodysculpture.com.
In general, the success of lipo depends on both the amount of fat in the region in question, and the ability of the skin that's left behind to contract (shrink) down to an acceptable position. Fortunately, this is usually the case, and since it works particularly well when the skin is thicker, such as on the back, it should work well in this case. The excess tissue may be both fat and fibrous tissue, which comes out less well than does fat.
A plastic surgeon should be able to give you an idea of how much improvement you'd get with a lipo, but I would think that the procedure would be helpful for you.
