Plastic Surgery - implant rippling

Expert: Gurmander Singh Kohli - 9/28/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I had a breast aug. ten days ago. I already have some slight rippling on the inside of one breast. I have smaller impants, 265 cc silicone.  Is it possible to fill the implant with more volume to correct the rippling after it has been placed? Or, do I have to place a larger implant all together. Thanks!

ANSWER: Thank you for writing to me,
Only if your implants have a port, most commonly used implants do not have this, can then additional fill can be placed within the implant. "I have smaller impants, 265 cc silicone" does this mean that they are made of silicone and filled with saline, or made of silicone and come pre-filled with silicone gel?

QUESTION: Thanks for such a quick response! My implants are Allergan Natrelle Silicone filled implants.  Is the rippling considered the surgeon's responsiblity to fix, or is it something that I have pay for.

Answer
Since the rippling occurs as a result of the thinness of the tissues and not as a result of surgeon error, correction is usually an additional expense for the patient. However, every surgeon has a different method of dealing with patients. If the patient is realistic and has a good rapport with the patient the surgeon may charge you very little for this exchange, but usually it is fees for anesthesia, facility and the surgeons fee. Please discuss with your surgeon and do not blame him.
