Expert: Alan M. Engler, MD, FACS - 11/8/2009
Question On July 6th, 2009 I had Bi-lateral Breast Reduction Surgery. My height is 5'4 141 pounds, and I had a bra size of 34DDD. I had one pound removed off each breast. I had the traditional breast reduction surgery. I did not have drain plugs after surgery. 5 days after surgery, I was very pleased with my size. Now 4 months later, I am wearing the same size bra I did before I has surgery. I saw my surgeon this week, who said I have a lot of scar tissue and I have very dense breast. My healing process will be slow. But I don't understand why I am now the same size as before? I have put on 3 pounds since surgery. My doctor said that my breast are still very hard and will soften. But I am confused why I am getting bigger rather than smaller. Thank you for your help. Dianna

Hi Dianna,
It seems strange that your bra size didn't change; I would think that a pound of breast tissue removed from each side would have reduced your cup size to about a D. One possibility, then, is that you were larger than a DDD but were fitting into that bra? It is, of course, hard for me to say.
Otherwise, though, trying to lose that weight may help you see what you should look like as a result of the surgery.
Sorry I can't come up with a better explanation...
Dr. E
