Plastic Surgery - Cosmetic surgery

Expert: Peter A. Aldea, MD, FACS - 11/2/2009

Question
I had my belly button pierced for about two years before I decided to take it out, it healed fine but there is still a very noticeable hole (it looks like it is still pierced), the hole has not closed up and it has been 2 years. I would very much like to get rid of this hole...can cosmetic surgery fix this? (if so, can you explain the procedure?) Is there any other options?

Answer
From Peter A Aldea, MD

Hi Sal,

It is fixable but the scar, like all scars is permanent.

When we want to make sure a piercing does not close up (= heal), a temporary stud or place holder is worn continuously. This prevents the raw walls of the wound from attaching to themselves - instead skin cells from the sides expand across the raw surfaces (EPITHELIALIZATION) and cover them permanently creating the tunnel. While you may have removed the piercing, the tunnel persists and will never close.

To close it, the skin cells covering the walls of the tunnel need to be removed and brought together with a few stitches.

Hope this answers you.
