Question
Is it possible to have a tummy tuck after an recurrent hernia repair with mesh? I had it done 7 months ago.

Answer
Hi Gretchen,

Well, nearly anything is possible but, that being said, I think it's extremely unlikely that anyone would want to open up an area that had surgery to repair a recurrent hernia in order to do a tummy tuck.

On the other hand, if there is an excess of tissue BELOW the area of the hernia, it might be possible to remove some of that without doing a formal tummy tuck.  This is a procedure that is essentially a panniculectomy; ie, the excess is removed without the remaining tissue being tightened or advanced in any way.

You can find out more about all of these at surgery.org and plasticsurgery.org.

I hope that this helps, and good luck,

Dr. Alan Engler
