Plastic Surgery/chairman of

I have a bit atypical question.

Dr Caldwell Esselstyn was chairman of Cleveland Clinic's Breast Cancer Taskforce.

--- I'm not a native speaker of English, so can you tell me what it means that he was a chairman of the clinic's breast cancer taskforce??? Does it mean he was a head of a certain department?

Hi Luke

Thanks for the question; I did not know anything about this doctor.  However, even a brief glance at Wikipedia tells a lot about him - he is quite accomplished, both professionally and personally, since he married the grand-daughter of the founder of the Cleveland Clinic, a surgeon named George Crile (to this day we surgeons use clamps he designed; i.e., the Crile clamp).

In general, the chairman of the task force means only that - he was the head of the group looking into that specific issue.  It could also mean that the doctor in question was a department chairman but not necessarily.

I hope that this helps and good luck,
Dr. E
