Plastic Surgery - Facial Liposuction

Expert: Alan M. Engler, MD, FACS - 3/14/2007

Question
I have always had chubby cheeks. I am in my 30s now and would like to get liposuction to get rid of them. Is that possible? Do you recomment it? Do I need to see a specialist or is that a relatively simple and common procedure that most plastic surgeons can do well? How much, on average, should it cost? And finally, can you recommend a doctor in New York City?

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

Answer
Dear Sandy,

There's lots more info about plastic surgery at my site, www.bodysculpture.com.

While liposuction is an apparently simple procedure, it is actually deceptively so.  The procedure involves making a few small incisions and then removing fat using a suction technique, via small tubes, or cannulas, that are put into the fat.  However, removing just the right amount - enough to provide an improvement but not so much as to cause a deformity - requires, in my opinion, a significant degree of both skill and experience.  As such, I would certainly not say that it is relatively simple, etc.

How much improvement you would get is hard for me to say.  A lot depends on exactly how much fat you have in between the skin and the muscles, as opposed to deeper tissues which are not accessible to lipo.  It also depends on how much extra skin you have, and on what the quality of the skin is.  I have seen some excellent results with this procedure, though the results tend to be subtle.  An entire transformation is not usually possible, while a refinement of specific areas is more likely.

You can get a list of doctors in New York from the following sites:  surgery.org and plasticsurgery.org.  You can narrow it down to specific regions with NYC.

I hope that this helps, and good luck,

Dr. E
