Plastic Surgery/acne scars

Question
I've stuggled to find out about the costs of laser surgery for acne scars, and whether it is safe or not. I'm really sorry to bother you if you don't know about this type of surgery, but if you could provide any info or guide me to somewhere i can find info it would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks

Answer
Dear Claire,

I may or may not be the best person to answer this but I'll tell you my experience.

I have not been impressed with the results of this procedure for acne scarring.  In fact, a few years ago I purchased a laser with the intent of using it for, among other things, that indication.  I was unhappy enough with the results and the whole process (it's not the easiest recovery) that I sold that laser and no longer offer that technique.  The safety of the techniques depends largely - as is the case will all resurfacing procedures, including peels and dermatbrasion - on how deep you go.  The deeper it is, the more dramatic the results but the greater the risks, and the harder the recovery.  Going too superificially will be easier and safer, but will do much less.

I suppose that there are people who have had more success that that.  Many of them are dermatologists, and you may want to check out the Dermatology website, aad.org, to find a few doctors near you.  Then, go visit them, and see what they have to say..

I wish I could give you simpler or even more encouraging info, but I guess I can't do more than tell you what I've experienced personally!

I hope this helps - good luck,

Dr. E
