Question
Dear Dr. Engler,
Three years ago I received chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer (I turned 35 during the course of treatment)...my eyelashes have never been the same. The hair on my head grew in thicker and healthier than ever, but my eyelashes are just awful...most of the lashes are super straight and won't curl with an eyelash curler, but in the outer corners of my eyes, the lashes are super curly and just look funny...what happened to the beautiful sweep of lashes I once had and can I get them back?
Seems like an insignificant problem, but I'd rather start small than address some of the other things wrong with my body...I miss those damned lashes!
Thanks, Denise

Answer
Dear Denise,

Thanks for writing to me.

First of all, I'm sorry for what you've had to go through, but congrats on coming through it the way you did.  Not that you wanted to, but it's inspirational.

Hair is a funny thing, and I know that it doesn't always come back after chemo the way it did before.  However, it's not really the area of my expertise, and I hesitate to offer advice, etc.  Hair is usually dealt with by dermatologists.

If you go to aad.org, you can find a dermatologist near you.  Also, in New York, Neal Sher is a specialist in hair and hair issues.  At the worst, contact him and see if he can recommend anyone in your area.

I'm not sure what else to suggest, but I didn't want to leave you without a response.

Good luck,

Dr. E
