Question
I am trying to obtain the script for the TV play The Castiglioni Brothers first performed at the Bristol Old Vic and then on BBC - Armchair Theatre in the 1950s. Bristol Old Vic don't have a copy and I can't seem to access the BBC Archive. Are you able to suggest a contact point or know where I might get hold of the script? I am not sure it was ever published in English.

Answer
I wish I could help you, Elliott. I've looked everywhere but can find no trace of this. If, as you say, it was originally a theatre production you could try calling Samuel French Ltd on 0207 255 4302 to see if they have a copy - but I expect you've already done that! Sorry not to be of more help. Roger

Back to you again, Elliott! I tried for more help and received this:

"Don't know if it was an Armchair Theatre from ABC, but indeed the BBC produced it, aired 7/7/58
(starred Peter O'Toole, Peter Jeffrey and Robert Lang among others).

The play's author was Alberto Colantuoni. I Fratelli Castiglioni, the original Italian version,
dates back to 1933 it would seem.

An Italian language movie was made in 1937.

My usual sources are struggling to come up with any single publication ever made in
English. Maybe the Bristol Old Vic will have a copy - I believe they have an excellent archive?

They have a photo that seems to be from a 1953 production and a programme on file though
no sign of any script."

It's also been suggested to me that you might try BBC Caversham who might have a camera script:

BBC Caversham Park,
Peppard Road
Caversham,
Berkshire,
RG4 8TZ
tel: 0118 946 3823

I don't know to which dept. you should write, but "Archives" would seem appropriate.

All the best,

Roger. (16.10.09)
