I have this same problem in an 11 year old home, so I know what you mean.  It is my bathtub drain upstairs which isn't used very often.  I found that if I turn on the faucet and let water into the trap, that keeps it from making noise for a while, but doesn't stop it from happening again within 24 hours.  Then after about a week it goes away and doesn't come back for months - maybe a year.  Did you ever get an answer to this problem?  If so, I'd like to hear what you came up with.
