Plumbing in the Home - Tub spout will only trickle, Shower head fine

Expert: Tommy Brooks - 9/13/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
We have lived in this home for about 4 months. The master bath tub & shower have worked great. In the last week, the hot or cold water merely trickles from the spout when turned on but the shower head still has full pressure. The tub spout is not leaking while turned off or while the shower runs. The tub/shower is a 3 knob setup.  We are not having this problem in our second bathroom and all other water pressure throughout the house is normal. Why is the tub spout only trickling water?

ANSWER: Hello Sarah, The middle knob is the diverter for the shower, and tub, this needs to be repaired, or replaced. if you are going to attempt this yourself, write me back and I will try to walk you through it, But if it is possible, call a plumber! Thanks Tommy

QUESTION: Hi Tommy,
Thanks so much for your quick response! My husband and father will be doing the repair so your help with instructions would be greatly appreciated. By the way, there is an access panel in our walk-in closet for the shower plumbing in this wall. Thanks!

Answer
Hi, you do not have to turn off the water, but you can if it makes you feel better, or if you are going to rebuild the complete valve, remove the handle, and the trim ring, you will need a set of tub sockets, get them at a hardware or a home depot store, use the appropiate size socket and remove the stem, you will need the stem to take with you to match up parts, it may be just the washer, or an o-ring, depending on the brand,if possible I would just replace the stem, see if the valve has a name on it, this will help, if not you can match the stem. Hope this helps

Thanks Tommy
