About Dana Bostick
Expertise
Pretty much any residential plumbing questions. Note: I live and work in Southern California. We do not as a rule use boilers, hot water or steam heating systems or wells so my knowledge in those areas is limited. There are others here that can probably answer those questions better. "We all is city folk" out here! What is a "well" LOL

Plumbing in the Home - Kitchen Sink not draining

Expert: Dana Bostick - 11/7/2009

Question
Our normally-reliable kitchen sink (w/ an insinkerator disposal) stopped draining today after disposing of a bunch of old refrigerator foods thru the disposal.  I've removed the plastic outlet pipe/trap and cleaned it and also have cleaned out the drain pipe using a powered cleaning snake.  After reassembling everything, same problem!  The disposal itself seems to work (spin) fine and water runs thru it OK (i ran the faucet w/ the outlet pipe still off and water came thru).  I give up, where could the stoppage be? Could it be a venting issue?  Thx! BTW, if it matters, we also have a dishwasher which drains into the disposal.

Answer
Hi Rick,
The problem is probably in the "baffle Tee" where the drains from each side come together ahead of the trap. it is supposed to keep the discharge from one side of the sink from coming up on the other. This is a restricted area and often becomes clogged.
Good Luck,
Dana
