About Dana Bostick
Expertise
Pretty much any residential plumbing questions. Note: I live and work in Southern California. We do not as a rule use boilers, hot water or steam heating systems or wells so my knowledge in those areas is limited. There are others here that can probably answer those questions better. "We all is city folk" out here! What is a "well" LOL

Plumbing in the Home - plugged pvc bathroom sink

Expert: Dana Bostick - 11/4/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1970 Detroit mobile home. I put some things down the bathroom sink drain that I should not have. I have used an auger thru the pvc pipe to try to clear the drain.  I have now found a road block where the auger will only go so far and that is it. It would drain some what before that but it appears it will not drain currently.  What do you suggest that I do?

ANSWER: Hi Nathan,
Bad boy, go to your room. LOL
Snaking through the trap is tough.  What is happening is that you are hitting the tee fitting at  the wall and the snake is not making the turn.  You will need to remove the p-trap and get into the tee directly so you can aim the snake down the drain pipe. From that point on, the fittings should all be "flowed" (smooth turns) so the the snake will go past.
Good Luck,
Dana

QUESTION: here is what makes me courious. I was able to get thru with with the snake prior to the blockage and went all the way thru but it drained a slight bit slow.  Therefore over time the water would back up. Now the snake will go about 10 ft or so by tape measure and then will not go any further and eventually springs out a bit.  I have a friend who says that he has a jet auger.  Will that clear the line or bunch things up?  I just hope that it will clear my line and main and not plug up the line in the street. I live in a trailer court.

Answer
Nathan,
What the heck did you drop down there?  It sounds like something hard that has gotten crosswise.  The pipes get bigger as you work your way down the system. What ever it is has gotten to an area of a bend or tee that it cannot get past. If you cannot grind it out, jetting will not likely work either.  Time to do some careful measuring and cut the line and physically take out what ever it is.

Been there, done that. My new construction jobs used to get sabotaged all the time. Someone would drop lengths of wood or bundles of stiff wires down the vents from the roof and they would get caught in the turns. Had to cut them out.
Good Luck,
Dana
