Question I have a sewer smell outside the house and occasionally in the bathroom, also gurgling sounds coming from the shower drains. Every once-in-a-while a toilet will be clogged, but a plunger clears it up easily. Everything else drains fine. The toilets have not backed up or overflowed. I've been doing some reading and will try snaking and flushing the roof vents, that may clear up the sound; but what about the smell?
Answer Hi Kevin,
You're on the right track. There is a vent somewhere that is not working properly. When this happens, the system will try to get air where ever it can and this will sometimes break the water seal in a trap and allow sewer gases to enter the house. Clearing the vents should help in both cases.
There could also be a broken sewer line under the house or in the yard area, you should check.
Best,
Dana
