Question QUESTION: my basement is unfinished, but they did stub in for a bathroom in one corner. My question is, why did they not concrete the entire floor. They left a square open, which is just dirt, around all of the plumbing that enters the ground, I am assuming entrance to the septic tank. This is really bothering me and no one around here seems to know why. I want to get some quikcrete and finish it off, but want to me sure it will not bother anything
ANSWER: Hi Toni,
This area might be what is called a "box out" and it is used for the tub drain. The end of the tub with the drain goes over this area and it allows the needed depth for the trap which extends down below the floor level. I would not fill it in. A tub will cover it and allow access at some future point for repairs if needed. A picture of the area would be helpful to be sure.
Good Luck,
Dana

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your quick response. However, it bothers me that dirt is exposed. Is this not a problem,,, health issues etc. Can you suggest anything I could cover it with,, just worried about exposed dirt.
Answer Hi Toni,
No, not a problem. Every home on a slab foundation has this condition. As I said, the tub will cover it so it is not really "exposed". You could pour a thin layer of concrete, not more than an inch deep, over the soil if it really bugs you. Just make sure you still have the needed depth for the trap if you are going to set a tub. The layer of concrete is easily broken out if needed.
Best,
Dana
