About Anthony - The Plumber
Expertise

I can answer most questions in the field of plumbing home repair for the inside or outside property of a home including irrigation systems, septic systems, well water systems, recirculation systems and I can address these questions from a beginning plumbing standpoint or for someone who has more advanced skills.

Are you working on an addition or remodelling? Need some bathroom or kitchen design ideas?

Run your questions by me since I enjoy that challenge of remodelling & new construction projects.

Experience
I have worked on a variety of major projects including Home Depot as an outsourced Project Manager tasked to repair the fire system at the Fullerton/Placentia store and distribution center in Orange County. I believe in simplifying any task I am assigned in order to avoid wasting time and material, while I always look for the simplest solution possible to the issue and then I execute my plan. Having lead many construction crews, large and small, I have been involved in residential and commercial repair and remodel projects including medical facilities, new home construction, high rises and apartment complexes. Building maintenance work in condominium complexes from Playa del Rey to Beverly Hills to the Hollywood Hills are a speciality. I have completed many maintenance work projects at complexes great and small.

Plumbing in the Home - Irrigation plumbing from the meter

Expert: Anthony - The Plumber - 7/4/2009

Question
The man that installed my Irrigation system has since left the business.
A question arose about the way he plumbed the connection to the meter.
The meter is a standard meter here in Huntsville, AL. I am told that there is plenty pressure from the county side of the meter. I live in the county and have a Septic Tank.
. The Irrigation system is a Hunter with PGP heads they are set with 5 gal per minutes red dispenser inserts. There are 4 Zones:   Zone 1; 7 pop up spray heads-zone 2;  7 PGP pop up heads-  zone 3; 8 PGP pop Up heads- zone 4; 9 PGP pop up heads.
He connected the Irrigation system downstream from the household connection meaning they both are connected to one pipe after the water pressure regulator, which is set to 60 lb. The water pressure regulator is  first connection after the meter itself. “ Meter----water pressure regulator-----Y connection-- household----/ irrigation system.”
Is this the most effected way of connecting an Irrigation System?  I have low pressure in the system and it does not do an effective watering, compared to my neighbors.
Any info is appreciated!! 
Thanking you in advance!!
Ted

Answer
Ted,

An irrigation system should ALWAYS be teed off the main water line and
separately valved for servicing.

This allows maximum pressure to feed whatever green area layout you
may have.

The main problem here is that your former plumber has reduced the
pressure substantially so that any water feature, irrigation layout
you have is seriously compromised.

You will need to relocate the tie-in ahead of the house pressure
regulator to get the desired pressure you need to run this system.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Anthony
