Plumbing in the Home/Packing for a steam valve repair

I have some leaky steam shut off valves on my home heating system. I have faucet packing (white string non Graphite) on hand. Is that different than the Graphite packing or will either work to repsck the steam shut off valves at the radiator?

Len, Either will work but graphite is much better. String  may be ok for water faucets but for steam I don't recommend it.  It disintegrates over time and requires over tightening to seal.Graphite is used is because of it's superior lubricating  properties and it compresses well and can withstand high temps.
