Plumbing in the Home - Kenmore elec. water heater

Expert: speedball1 - 7/26/2004

Question
Hi Speedball1,

I have a Kenmore Limited Edition 10 electric water heater, Model 153.314472, Serial A98255003
240 V
3800 W
40 Gallon

The insulated shell filled with water (between the tank and the exterior skin) and tripped the circuit breaker (the house box, not the red button) by apparently shorting out the electric. Any problems in the past with this thing have been cured by pushing the red reset button - not this time, I fear. Is this thing dead? Did something break? The relief valve didn't lift. A possible source might have been the vent on the pipe on top of the unit...

Any thoughts based on your experience would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Charlie

Answer
Good morning Charlie, Sorry!! Sounds like the boiler has opened up a crack in one of the welds.  Time to think about a replacement.  Also if you can't test the T&P valve by lifting the lever , replace that too.  Good luck and thank you for rating my reply.  Tom
